I am currently swapping a 4.0 SOHC engine from a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT into a 1985 Bronco II. As I go to install the engine I noticed the motor mounts don’t match up with what is mounted to the chassis from the Bronco and what is mounted to the engine itself. I attempted to drill new holes to fit but as I attempted to fit it realized I was still slightly off. I don’t want to keep drilling the already motor mounts so if that’s the only thing I can do I’ll pick up another fresh set and drill the holes right but besides that are there any other options or tips?

You should try some 93 explorer engine mounts they should come way closer to lining up for you

There are a few people who have put the sohc 4.0 into a truck like yours there are some fitment issues sticking a sohc in there you should be aware of. Have you researched this conversion? Your 85 will have to be converted to efi as well

The sohc is a very tight fit into a ttb rig like the bii!

I would like to see pics from someone doing this swap. My ttb is a 1991 4 dr 4wd Explorer. I'll have an extra 4.0 SOHC and automatic, wiring harness, pcm that is coming out of my wife's 2002 Sport Trac that could be used. I wonder if the specific pieces out of the A4LD could be used to make the 2002 Transmission a four wheel drive type? I don't know what you call the 2002 automatics. 5R55...?

5r55e

You can convert the 5r to 4wd yes but not using a4ld parts… you will use parts from a similar 4wd 4r or 5r55e (96-04 4.0 v6)
The output shaft has to change as well as the tail housing.. so the entire trans must come apart

Most of the old tailhousing still have the
Bolt bosses to accept the transfer case linkage, up until 04 or so then they quit casting the holes into the tailhousing

Did you see Brett’s sohc conversion thread? He put a sohc in his 94 sport many many years ago… it has become a pretty popular conversion. There is a supercharged sohc bronco 2 running around so cal and the Mexican border… she’s all over YouTube that sucker moves sohc makes more
Power then the 302

No, I have not seen Brett's thread. Direct me towards it please. If I follow through with this idea of the 2002 4.0 SOHC into the 1991 Explorer, I will need the special pieces to upgrade the 5R55E? parts. I'm torn between converting the '91 to a 302 powered 4x4 or a 4.0 SOHC 4x4. Which would you prefer?
The yellow 2002 Sport Trac is go to be getting a 5.0 now, so there will be a 4.0 SOHC/Auto 2wd available.

The 91 needs a 351W

I prefer the 5.0
The half ton transmission is why

But the sohc is v8 power and 5 speeds
By 2001 they were very strong 02-08 the end is their run they are tough engines
The trans is very good by 2002 as well
The a4ld became the 4r44e which became the 4r55e and the 5r55e..
Which you have
They are tough after 2001

Then it became the 5r55s and 5r55w which were used behind the sohc and 4.6 in the gen iiis

I can send you an output shaft and tailhousing no problem …
So many v6 cores

I’m gonna have to 351
Something to make
Josh happy
