1998 4.0l Idle And Starting Problems

I Have A 1998 Xlt Explorer With The Sohc 4.0l. I Am Wondering If Anyone Can Solve My Problem. When You First Start The Truck It Will Idle Up And Down From About 400 Rpm To 2000 Rpm Rereatedly. When I Floor It In Park Or Drive The Truck It Stops. Today It Would Not Start At All, So I Disconnected The Battery And Let It Sit, It Started After A Couple Of Attempts, So I Let It Run For 5 Minutes And Turned It Off Then It Started Right Up. Does Anyone Have An Idea What This Could Be? Is It The Tps Sensor, Maf Sensor, Pcv Valve Or Fuel Pump? Any Help Would Be Appreciated. Thanks, Craig.

Does it happen mostly when the engine is cold? Have you had the intake manifold O-rings replaced? Use the search feature and run a search for 00M12 and 01M01. These are extended warranty programs for bad parts on the early SOHC engines. If the o-rings are leaking allowing unmetered air in, the engine will not idle. As the engine warms up and expands, the o-rings seal and it idles better. Another culprit could be the IAC. Search for how to clean IAC and you'll find more info about that as well.

My 99 explorer SOHC was doing the exact same thing. I received the notice from Ford about above mentioned recall, but at the time my explorer had over 70,000 miles so i didn't qualify. Last week I replaced the lower intake manifold gaskets myself and it solved the problem.
