4x4 4.0 v6 explorer has 130,000 miles. Tranny use to shift fine through all grears except overdrive. if you hit the overdrive button, it is like putting the car in neutral while at highway speeds. i have been driving around like that but now it starts off in second gear and then kicks into first at about 10 mph then right back into second. any ideas what this is? i changed the fluid and adjusted the bands and no difference. Oil was clean and not burnt, bottom of the pan was clean. should i rebuild this one or find one already rebuilt? this is a 4x4 tranny. :salute:

Sounds to me like the OD band needs adjusting or replacing.

The only other thing I can think of is a blown out valve body gasket.

J. hope the problem is a simple fix.

should i put in the updated valve body and new gasket or is this a waste of time?

I had some work done on the overdrive per a recall at the dealership. It didn't seem to make a difference on my vehicle, but it was a free repair. It may be worth researching- like I said it was free.
