Drove the suv a lot in the last few days. Up & down passes so I took it out of O/D several times along the way. Did't hear any clunks of bangs. Drove it yesterday, parked it, then went to drive again & it wouldn't go into gear at all. No reverse, D or any lower gear & when I went to put it back into park, it just had a grinding noise. I have a 1997 Limited 4.0 4 x 4 parts car & think the tranny fits my EB 1998. No Check Engine light on & didn't notice the o/d light flashing or anything there. No major leak under the car either. Thoughts?

Any DTC,s? If you switch to R, the reverse lights work? Enough tranny oil?
If you unplug the main transmission electrical plug and try it you should have 3rd gear and reverse.
If not it is internal, no pressure...

No major leak under the car either.
In some cases the tranny lost oil which goes into the transfer case (about 1,5 liter).
Check fluid level on upper plug of the TC.

The front of the t case will not allow fluid in
Leak into the tailhousing? Mayb, but into the t case? No way Jose

Sorry, but it is possible, had it two times with my BW4405 cause of bad TC input seal. Lost transmission pressure in a sharp fast corner caused by loss of oil which was in the TC.
Filled up the missing tranny oil and wonder where it goes.
After the transfer case was slowly filled up it gets very hot and spit the oil out of the short vent tube.
All this trouble caused by a TC overhaul kit with the seals included, but they dont last very long.
Its important to choose the origional seals, they fit better (goes deeper in TC seat) and last longer.

Must be some pressure to push
Fluid into the t case Past its front seal
Do they share a vent line? The trans and t case in your truck?

No both have seperate vent hoses.
The right TC on the picture has a seal with a flange and it's getting out by itself (don't fit tight).

The left TC has the really matching seals in it, they go deeper a little bit.

Yes, there must be some pressure in the tailhousing to push the oil into the TC.
But nobody knows if it's normal, maybe only my 5R55E produce too much pressure?

Every time i have changed the TC there was oil inside the tailhousing,
but i think the oil should rinse back to the transmission when engine off.

If the level is good, I’d drop the pan, start investigating the valve body and associated gaskets. 5R55E are notorious for blowing out separator plate gaskets
