1998 Explorer with a blown engine.

I uploaded some pictures but don't have a clue where they are. I do have a couple in my album.

Thanks. It worked.

Also I just tried Rislone engine additive in the # 1 cyl. and it went up to 156 psi. from 58 psi. This forces me to try another.

Finally after a lot of wasted time and energy I have my motor out. Tomorrow I will put it on the engine stand and begin to tear it down. It is a 4 wheel drive so it has a few more bellhousing bolts than Streetrod2000's 2 wheel drive. All is well. More later on the stuck ring situation.

Hey Mike. How's it all going? I only just got your question today.

A glazed bore will result in low compression because the rings aren't binding into the cylinder wall. This allows the gasses to pass by the rings.
Did you check the rings for clearance? Check the ring groove gap in the pistons too.
If the bore is glazed or if you are fitting new rings the bore will need to be honed out. This scuffs the surface of the bore so the rings can bite into the wall for better compression.

Thanks for the reply.
I haven't done anything except take out 2 pistons and see the rings are not stuck.
The front chain guide was missing and the rear one was broken.
I picked up an old washer rinse tub to clean the motor parts as there was a lot more sludge than I saw at first.
I am also thinking of just replacing the motor due to the price of a gasket set and 2 chain, guide, tensioner sets and anything else I haven't decided on yet ( rings, bearings, tool rentals, etc.).
