My 1998 ford explorer 2wd rear wheel drive has only first and 2nd gear reverse and drive don't work can someone please tell me what is wrong with it. It threw out no codes my check enginelight is on.

What if you move with 2nd, and then put Drive?

If your CEL is on, there are stored trouble codes. Find someone with a better scanner that can read transmission codes (or get Forscan).
