I figured I would post this just to see if anyone is having or had similar symptoms. I have a 98 Explorer Sport SOHC with about 160k. All up to date on all maintenance; new plugs and wires, mobil 1 oil changes regularly, and did a filter and gasket kit and complete flush on the transmission with Merc 5. I actually just replaced the transmission filter and added new fluid again just to make sure I had the filter seated properly. Upon hard acceleration it shudders pretty bad. I didn't notice it until I replaced all Four tires, not sure if it matters but I did go up one size bigger than what it came stock with.

Does the shudder get worse as you accelerate? If so, that could mean an off balanced tire. I see you live in ma. Also check to make sure you dont have any ice build in your rims. That can throw a tires balance off causing a bad shake.

The shudder goes away as the speed increases at about 20-30mph, it goes away.

Universal joint on the drive shaft is probably causing it.

Shuddering!!

My 98 EB did that when ihad 265 size tires on my truck,i put 255's on it and the shuddering stopped, also had complete alignment at the same time.

The tires that came with it were 255 and I replaced them with the 265's and I soon noticed the problem. Anyone know of a fix for this besides going back to 255, I really like the new tires.

I still think it's your tranny slipping. Bigger tires would make it harder on the tranny, making the vibration more noticable. I had the same shudder feeling not long before my tranny completely died. Have you tried adjusting the bands?

When I first fealt the shudder I thought it was my tranny too. I guess at this point I wait and see if it dies. I have actually put about 15k on it since I first fealt the shudder. How do you adjust the bands?

I just bought a "98 xlt, an it "shudders" or hesitates in all gears, (except 1st) but only during light acceleration. I don't think it's the tranny. It seems more like a fuel or HO2 problem....Any suggetions?
