My soon to be brother in law has a 1998 AWD Explorer with the V8 auto tranny and 95,000 miles. Recently he was experiencing a 'banging' noise upon initial acceleration from a stop. We thought it might be the UV joint and had it checked out. A *trusted* mechanic dropped the driveshaft and inspected the joints only to report that everything was fine. He did some listening and isolated it to the tranny/transfer case. He suggested a tranny shop and off the truck went.
The tranny shop took the car for a ride and instantly said, "I know exactly what it is." In fact, he was told that the shop owner has done several of these repairs to this generation of Explorer. Apparently there is a chain inside the case that expands due to a faulty design. After time, it starts to bang against the case as tension is applied. Once the vehicle is moving, the chain doesn't slap against the cover---only after initially starting out. I.E. from a stop sign.
Back at the shop, the owner said the repair is common enough that he stocks a few of the chains. He wants $800 for the repair.
One month ago $900 was dumped to replace both front hubs. Quite frankly, these repairs are starting to become annoying. Before another $800 is spent, can anyone tell me if this repair is common and if so, how much it should cost to fix. Also, what is the *part* called and what does it do, exactly?
Thanks in advance!
