1999 Eddie Bauer Ford Exp
I have 93K stock miles on my 1999 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer. I just ordered a set of new tires. (Good by Good Year Wrangers AT/S, which are sucky tires.) And I'm replacing them with Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's.
But my newbie question is, if I do alot of long highway driving with these tires; what is a good soft but stable shock to purchase. I will try the bounce test today.. I also have a slight sag that I would like to eliminate and sit up a little higher in the back. (if possible). BTW my EB floats on speeds above 60+ MPH. :us:

Looks like most people like the monroe sensatracs. Any EB owners have these?

Thanks

Since I use my truck differently than you, I'll not recommend any shock maker but you'll most likely not be able to eliminate the sag with shocks only. For sag, you'll have to address the leaf springs.

First you need to replace your rear sway bar. That is a major change right there in ride and handling. As for shocks, there are several to choose from. Edelbrock makes a good shock, I have those but mine bottom out easily in the rear. My X is lowered and has a ton of extra weight in the rear. So it's hard for me to say they are great or not. Also allot of people here love the Rancho's 5000 and 9000. 9000 being probably the top selection. I have not tried those yet but they may be my next shocks. Aldive has tried both sets and stuck with the Ranchos. I will make a proper evaluation with the Edelbrocks when I redo my frontend, lower the front shocks some more and get a frontend alignment, until then, I can't say good things nor bad things about the Edelbrocks except they sure made a difference in my ride from factory shocks.

I had the Edelbrocks on my 99 and hated them; I wouldn't hit a wild dog in the ass with them. They allow excellent handeling but the ridw quality is zero.

I currently use Rancho 9000x and find them to be very nice.

Good luck....

Darnit I got the Monroe's

And they are average... My truck seems to sit a little lower than the stock shocks.. (maybe its me.) Well they handle well on curves with my new Dueler A/T REVO with UNI-T AQII tires; newly aquired from tirerack.
(BTW.. These tires are so much quieter and smoother than those Good Year Wranger AT/S that ford recalled out on me 2 years ago.)

Thanks to this board I did this bounce check from the board here
A quick way to tell if they are done, is to bounce the vehicle on each end then let go and count how many times it bounces before it stops. If it is more than 2, the shocks need replacement. The rear will be kind of hard to tell because it will come back up and stop normally, unless they are absolutely destroyed, but if you want to really improve the ride get new shocks.

She bounced 3 times.. :p

Anyway Pep Boys had a special on the Menoroes Sentracks and they could put my new tires, balance alignment, shocks on for such a very resonable price. My only concern is it seem like they did not get many ford Eddie B. cause the guy kid who installed my shocks did not even know how to take my spare tire down..

On the smooth highway my truck feels nice. but I feel every little bump on the local roads. Maybe It's my tire combination. By the way. my Lub Lub Lub wheel tapping problem is gone. Maybe I will upgrade to the Ranchi 9000X in hope to get a better smoother feel after 3K with these shocks.
Any recommendations on which rear sway bar I should order for a smooth bumpyless ride?

:us:
Now to upgrade those stock lights.
Thanks.

i got a 96 Sport and want to replace my shocks but kinda new to all the suspension stuff. How do i figure out how long of shock do i need? I have a 3" BL and planning to put 32" on in next week or so. I think i am going with the ranchos.

The body lift has no effect on shock length. The upper shock mount is a cross member of the frame. What does have an effect on shock length is your suspension lift. I have a 1.75" TT and F150 leaf springs and use the ARB/OME shocks. Eventually, I have a 2" BL and 32s.
