99 explorer
My wife just purchased a '99 ford explorer. however, it seems to have a clean powerful engine, it has this extremely loud rattling noise under the hood when you start it up and during the time i drive it. the noise just doesn't go away. i've been doing some research on it and being somewhat of a mechanic, well at least i try to be i narrowed it down to check and replace the tensioners first. hopefully this will fix my dilema. any other suggestions out there that i am overlooking?

tired of noise,

marbles rattling?

If the engine sounds like marbles are rattling around inside the block then I doubt the tensioners will help. There is probably a broken front or rear cassette guide allowing the timing chain to contact metal surfaces. Many people with engines in that condition sell them rather than repair because the cost to pay a shop to do the work often exceeds the value of the vehicle. The following thread provides more information: Timing chain rattle resolution process - SOHC V6

We carry timing chains for Ford Explorers, and also serpentine belt tensioners. Usually when a serpentine belt tensioner goes bad the belt might squeal for a minute when you start the truck up, and the tensioner may bounce up and down a lot.
