1999XLT flashing HU display

I have a 1999 XLT with the factory AM/FM/CASS/CD (single cd) head unit that also controls a 6CD changer in the console. The last few days, I've notice the display flashes from dim to bright from time to time - sometimes rapid flashing, sometimes slow.

I recall reading some threads a long time ago about a similar problem (but I couldn't find them using the search feature).

Is there a good, inexpensive fix for this (preferably not buying a new HU)? Are many of you having this same problem?

i think the problem (not sure) was the fuse.
