1st gen X sub location

I've been thinking about getting a 12" sub but i cant seem to figure out an exact place to put it, i rarely have more than 1 other person in my explorer but i also always carry around a box with different fluids and jumper cables (mine has 204k miles always try to keep it in my explorer just in case) and mine didnt come with the stock 6.5, so anyone have any ideas or pictures of a nice solid place thats not completely in the way? it's also the sport not the xlt

The stock location is 6.5 Inches, you can put the 8 inch box from a 98+ in there though.
MTX also makes a 10 Inch that fits back there.

However, for a 12, you can put it under the seats if you want it out of the way, but keep in mind that will make it hard to fold the seats down, you'd have to move the box every time.

I've never seen a 12" box made for under the seat of a 94 sport , As I have a 91 Navajo aka sport 2 Door and I have had many sub setup's in it , I have looked for something out of the way but loud enough for me , That Didn't happen , I normally have 2-12"s in the cargo area , but I have a single 12" in a slot ported prefab box right now and its decently loud for what it is .

ok thanks, ive been looking for a few months now but i havent found any set ups that are at least somewhat out of the way, and im sure even with a compact sub they wouldnt fit under the back seats, i guess ill have to figure something out, bruce would you happen to have a picture of your sub set up? all the pictures i see in explorers are always competition size ones or dual subs that take up a lot of room.

I built a box for my 12" that fit along the passengers side of the cargo area, up to the bottom of the trim and ran all the way from the tail gate to the bottom of the rear seats in my 93 sport before I bought the 91 XLT and moved everything from truck to truck, which included building a totally new box for the 91. I did have to cut a little bit of the plastic so that the box would fit AND have enough room for the sub.

Unfortunately I don't think I have a picture of it installed (I can't believe I never took one!) I can, however, get you a pic of the box sometime....wish it was still here in AZ with me and not in OH at the moment, I'd make you a deal if interested...

ok thank you and 5spdman, it may be a few months before i actually get up and go get a sub and amp as money is a tad tight at the moment im just looking for ideas when i have the time and money to get it all put together and figured i should build my own box too, i like to take pride in my belongings so i always try to go build not bought

In that case then, here's a little drawing of the box I built:

It was out of the way, only coming about 8-10" away from the side of the truck and looked quite clean (still want to carpet it.) No patent, so if you like it, run with it, and measure to your liking.

You don't have to go crazy with money for a decent sound...my sub, amp, box materials and wiring all came under $150. I should add a capacitor, which would take me slightly over that mark, but only by a few bucks.

well thank you, i havent seen a box quite like that yet and im fairly surprised on the price, i havent been able to find a decent brand product for subs or amps yet, wiring is only a few bucks and i have most of it at the moment anyways just have to get $200 for the amp and sub, at least for a product with good reviews and sound, the amp is whats going to cost me more in the end

A lot of the design process for the box was to maximize the usable space in the back while still getting good sound...granted the box is actually tiny for the sub I have (specs call for 11 ft3 ported and 19 ft3 enclosed, and I didn't have either of those) but it hit HARD. I also spent months looking at different subs and amps and reading reviews, comparing prices....my system setup is in my signature.

yeah i was going to make the box as wide as i needed for the sub and maybe a bit bigger depending on the amp size and mount the amp on the back but with some washers or spacers in between the amp and box so it lessens the chance of overheating i would think, or at least i think/hope that would help, im still trying to learn at least the basics of electrical so i can get the right amp for the sub and not be over/under powered and make sure it last longer than just a year or two.

I got a Rockford powered 10". Sounds good. Not going to rattle windows but inside it kicks. Small enough that I still have most of my space.
There's a grill on it now...

That is the amp...it's built into the box. All one unit: just add wires.

I forgot to get a Pic of the Sub setup sorry , I ended up selling the sub the day after I posted I would get a pic . But Here is a Pic of the 2-12" Setup , That red/black tool box sits in front of the subs in between the subs and hatch area .

they make the back of the explorers look so small haha they look great though, thanks everyone for all the feed back its helping my thought process of the design for the box and amp placement. and thanks 5sped i didnt notice what wires were going to the box i was on my phone at the time and it doesnt have the biggest screen.

Well basically that angled part of the box is only a panel; there's not much box behind it. So instead of wires sticking out all over the place, they come out from under the carpet (or however you run them) under the box and then out through those holes...keeps a clean look while managing the wires. I'll try and get you a picture of what the box actually looks like.

When gluing the pieces together, I suggest using Gorilla Glue as it expands when drying. Along with that, I bought some kind of rubber coating in a rattle can and sprayed all of the seams and the terminals inside the box.
