Here are the issues:
Vehicle 1:
1997 4dr, 4x4, CD Changer, powerseats, 4.0L SOHC, 3.73 Traction-Lok, 43,000 miles, Auto. Clunks from "D" to "R", dealer says pinion seal leaked and was replaced (hmmm... backlash problem??). Assures me that they will fix whatever is wrong.
* Is there a history of problems in that area?
* How reliable is the SOHC vs the OHV 4.0?
* How well would it tow my 3,500lb camper?
* I Noticed body paint overspray on the hood "rubber snubbers" (adjustable hood stops?) on 2 of 2 Explorers I looked at, Is that normal? ..or signs of overspray from accident damage?
* What am I looking at for gas mileage?

Vehicle 2:
1997 2dr Sport, 4x4, 4.0L (OHV), 5 speed, 3.73 Traction-Lok, 66,000 miles.
* Is there a history of problems with this set up?
* Is the clutch as weak as the Ranger (70,000 miles tops).
* How well would it tow my 3,500lb camper?

Vehicles are priced right, drive great, and look clean. CarFax was spotless (private, 1 owner, original miles). I would like opinions on the "best" vehicle for hassle-free towing and comfort. Thanks, hope to be driving one of the two tomorrow!

the 97 SOHC had quite a few reliability issues. so i would choose the OHV out of those two. but some might argue that by now all the potential problems with the engine were fixed. but i still would rather go with the more reliable OHV.

also, i like the 5 speed manual transmission. mine is still running strong with about 160,000 miles on it (all original). i havent had a single problem with my 92 XLT (OHV V-6 and 5 speed manual). and i get about 20 mpg with normal driving.
