Can anyone help me out here. I have a 91 Ranger with a 2.3 in it. Im thinking of swapng the engine out with a 97 models 2.3. Will I have to change anything to make this work? Or, will the computer and everything match up with the newer engine?

If anyone can shed some light on this, please do.

Thanks

Wes

the block and heads should be basically the same

the computers however will not be.... 97 will have used an egr type system with an obd-2 compliance whereas a 91 will have probably used egr-less system and only obd-1 compliance parameters.....

Will I have to get the computer and wiring harness out of a 97 and out it in my 91? If so how hard of a job would this be??

Thanks

Wes

Depends...getting the computer and harness isnt that bad if you have time....Whats wrong with the old engine?

The old engine needs rebuilt it has 200,000 miles + on it. It burns oil and is losing power. Instead of a re-build I was going to get another engine and do a swap. My friends dad has a junk yard and he has a 97 ranger there wrecked with only 45,000 miles on it. I was going to get that engine and throw it in the 91.

jsut the physical engine should just bolt in fine, but you will probably have to reuse a lot of the old parts....... also not sure when it comes to issues with the new egr and such... i dont know if you can jsut plug holes or what

Thats what I was thinking. Taking the 97 engine block and head and using my 91 injection and wiring setup on it.

well not 100 sure, but that newer engine will probably have differnt locations of things and hole for egr and such that the 91 did not... so you might run into issues with needing to plug things up and what not
