Well, after being pulled over for presumably not having a tailpipe, didn't actually mention why. I received a fix it ticket for my exhaust and to get an updated insurance card. I won't actually get a ticket if I can complete the repairs within ten days. So I picked up a 14" magnaflow from pepboys, they were next to were I was pulled over. Tomorrow I am having the flowmaster removed and the magnaflow installed with a 2.5" tailpipe. I've been looking at updating my exhaust for a while, and this just brings it about much faster. I was going to go with a MAC muffler and custom pipes, but I don't have the time right now to order one. What I may end up doing in the future is have flanges installed before and after the muffler and the same done to another muffler. That way I can install the muffler of my choice for the day or to my mood. I haven't been able to find a decent soundclip of an OHV with the shorter magnaflow, so hopefully I won't be dissappointed. But there are so many mufflers I want to try, Hooker Aerochamber, IMCO, MAC, and now the magnaflow is going on. As to why I was pulled over, I think it was because I hit the gas a little too hard causing the front end to pull up a little and I didn't see the cop in my blind spot, drivers rear I believe. I think with the noise and the way the front end pops up, he thought he'd investigate. Made no mention of it ever being too loud, so I asked if the problem was not having a tailpipe or being too loud, he said it was probably a combination of the two. The muffler was dumped with a 2.5" turndown facing the leaf springs which should not have been too loud from the drivers side. I'm just glad it was a warning and all will be well after an hour at the muffler shop and 10 minutes at the insurance office. Hopefully I will be able to post some sound clips when everything is done. I am in the process of moving too, so time is tight until next week. Oh, any interest on a used 2.5" flowmaster 40 series, 2.5" in/out, offset in/center out? Will have exhaust hangers attached to a short piece of pipe, as well as a short section of 2.5" pipe up front. I painted it with High temp flat black paint, though it may look like a super 40, it is not.

Well I hope you dont have to have a tail pipe in Indiana because on my 5.0 it is just left off right after the secendary cats. Once I get some money a side pipe is going on.

Well, the flowmaster is out, and magnaflow is on. Its a 4x9" case 2.5" in/out and polished stainless steel. COuld have done without polished, but its all they had. Its much quieter at idle, but once you touch the throttle is sounds similar to a flowmaster. I was planning on having everything welded, but shops wanted between $150-175 to bend a tailpipe and weld everything. I chose to find a stock tailpipe from another vehicle that should fit. I looked at a diagram from a durango, its 2.5" pipe and routing looks similar. Hopefully I can get it to fit without modifying too much. Let everyone know how it turns out tomorrow.

Was looking for something different. Maybe a little bit quieter. I'm always on the lookout for something better sounding. I've run a bunch of different setups lately, all low buck. I've run straight pipes with a tailpipe, straight pipe with no tail pipe, either a turn down or in front of the rear tire, a glasspack with turn down, glass pack with tail pipe, flowmaster with tail pipe, and then just the flowmaster with a turn down. The tail pipe i've been using is off the flowmaster I have, but its been hacked quite a few times and is hard to keep from twisting with the clamps, causing it to lay on the rear shock and melt the shock boot. Tonight me and the GF went out for dinner, about a 20 minute highway ride, and its starting to break in a little, get slightly louder at idle, but it sounds smooth. I wanted more growl to it, but its not bad, plus there is NO DRONE at all. I still don't have the tail pipe on, it currently has a short straight pipe on the back to attach to the hangers and turn down. Its not bad sounding, not quite what I wanted, but will work for now until I get a muffler I want and the system set up the way I want. All together I may have spent $130. Still can not get over how quiet this thing is on the highway, but it does really open up when you step on it. Plus my passing power and low end seems to have improved.

Installed the tailpipe this morning, went right in, no major problems, not cutting was required. The pipe was rattling on the shackle, so I purchased an exhaust hanger and bolted to the pipe out of sight, and then to the frame to pull it off the shackle. Everything is tight, looks fairly clean, and sounds decent. Also the bends on the tailpipe look to be mandrel bends. There are no kinks or crushes in the pipe at all. The tail pipe is from a 1998 Dodge Durango with the 360. There are 2 hangers on the pipe near the end, and 1 of them actually lined up with my factory hanger, I just had to unbolt the hanger and flip it so that it would reach. It hangs a little low, but no lower than the shackle. Once I get it approved by the PD, I may cut the tip off about 2-3" in front of the hanger and add a turndown as the tip looks a little funky, and it should tuck it up out of the way a little bit better. I also had to use an 18" extension of pipe to go from the muffler to the tailpipe, apparently Durango tailpipes are shorter or their mufflers are tucked almost up to the axle. I will post pics hopefully sometime this weekend. As for the sound, idle is still a bit quieter than the flowmaster, but sounds deeper, and acceleration sounds much deeper than the flowmaster, but the note is similar. Performance seems to be good, no loss of low end or anything like that. As mentioned, as soon as a camera becomes available, pictures and possibly a soundclip will be posted.

Sound clip made

Just finished uploading a soundclip from my cell phone to you tube. In person it is deeper and not this ricey sound, but the idle sounds pretty close.

Another Video

I went out and got another video of me accelerating hard in the first 2 gears. Again this is with a camera phone, video isnt that great, but the sound is better than with the first 2 videos that I posted. The videos were shot at night with no one around on empty streets.

Hard Acceleration

Brown wire mod induced burnout

Enjoy

Hey Dan you seem to be pretty educated on piping as well as mufflers. I have a question for you.
I have a 97 explorer v6 with dual inlet and single outlet. Im looking for that rumbling sound but then again not to loud so I went with the flowmaster 50 series. I wanted 40 series but there was nothing that fit my truck exhaust system. I am now looking for a 2.5 inch tail pipe but can barely find anything for a decent price to fit my truck was wondering if you or any1 else could give me some suggestions please.
And also would like your opinion on the flowmaster 524553 50 series.
Thanks !

Here is a tailpipe from walker/Dynomax. I used it for a while, and looked good, and fit good. You may or may not have to flip the rear exhaust hanger from one side of the frame to the other. It just bolts to the frame so its not a big deal.

Before I redid my entire exhaust, I used a Magnaflow Y pipe to convert stock piping to a single 2.5" pipe. Then I ran a single in/single out muffler.

If you want growl, go with Super 40 series. That's what I have. Rumbly, but doesn't drone too bad due to delta flow.

Wow...You know, that never crossed my mind! I will definitely try that out. Well it sound good on a v6 explorer? And also where could I get Y piping for a 97 ford explorer v6?

I mentioned the y-pipe in the other thread you are posting on.
None of the 40 series mufflers come with a dual inlet, single outlet. Your only option with flowmaster is either the Super 50, or the 70 series. If you want a good sounding muffler for the SOHC, the cherry bomb vortex sounds great.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/IMM-88107/. The muffler is reversible, so the orientation of it doesn't matter. There are a few with this muffler and like I said, it sounds awesome. It seems the number of dual inlet mufflers with a single 2.5" outlet has diminished in the last year or so. Otherwise, cherry bomb also has the elite, but it is much quieter, and longer. Your other option is to get a y-pipe installed so you can use a single inlet/outlet muffler. That way you can use any muffler you want.

You can get a magnaflow y-pipe off ebay for anywhere from $25-50. 2.25" dual in, single 2.5" out. They are universal so they require some thinking to get them to work, but Afboy can give you more information on where to cut to install it. I am also going to give you a link to a thread that Afboy and I posted quite a bit of sound clips to.

That thread should answer most if not all your questions reguarding how a muffler sounds.

Thank you! As soon as I read this post I ordered the Y pipe from magnaflow as well as the flowmaster 40 series from summit racing. The link that you attached though does not seem to be working. I just was wondering what the 40 series would sound like on a v6 because some locals have been telling me that many after market mufflers sound bad on v6 explorers and sound better, and are meant for v8. I am new to this so I am just gathering all the info but do not know who is speaking the closest to the truth.

At the top of the page, there is a sticky called 4.0 Exhaust clip Thread. It has sound clips from a bunch of different members, using various mufflers, their configuration etc. Youtube also has a ton of different sound clips as well. Here is one I found doing a quick search via youtube.

While my exhaust is a full off-road Y pipe from the manifolds back (2.5" pipe, no cats") mine is a bit different but you get the point. Super 40 flowmaster

Here's the same set up with an original 40 flowmaster
