I am going to drop my trans pan and clean out my A4LD by jacking up the front to get the max amount of fluid out. I am then going to run some more fluid out the tubes near the radiator as others have done.

How much trans fluid do I need for a A4LD to safely clean out the majority of the old stuff.

I am going to drop the pan and then refill with 4 Liters, so I will be back to where I started. How much should I run through and replace to get the majority of it out of there. I am going to Mobile 1 ATF.

I am also going to be taking my rear differential cover off and changing the gasket and the fluid. It takes approx. 3 liters, but what kind for a 97 Ford Explorer Sport rwd A4LD trans?

Do I have a limited slip differential in a 97 Explorer Sport A4LD trans OHV 4.0L. I am switching to Mobil 1 Synthetic. Do I need the friction modifier then?

i dont think you have an a4ld... i dont think they used them after 94..... also, if you have an lsd, you will need friction modifier, unless the fluid you put in says it can be used without a limited slip additive.... what is your axle code? it is located on your door tag

You have a 5R55E, check your owner's manual. My '97 Owner's manual calls for 9.25 liters for the 2WD (9.55 liters for the 4x4). Just droping the pan will only remove 3.82 liters. The rear differential holds 2.9 - 3.1 liters. If you don't have a limited slip then it calls for 80W90 conventional gear oil. If you have a limited slip then it calls for 75W140 synthetic gear oil with 4 oz. of Ford friction modifier. There will be a tag on one of your rear differential bolts telling you to use synthetic fluid if you have a limited slip and no one has removed the tag. There will probably still be a tag even if yours is open, but I'm not positive about that though.

I have a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 OHV 2wd. I have the A4LD it says so when I goto http://www.fram.com and do a lookup for trans filter try it yourself:

goto http://www.fram.com and choose parts catalogue. Choose 97, Ford, Explorer Truck, OHV

YOU DON'T HAVE THE A4LD.... THEY WERENT EVEN OFFERED IN 97... THE FRAM SITE IS WRONG.... AGAIN, YOU DON'T HAVE AN A4LD.... JUST IN CASE YOU DIDNT UNDERSTAND: YOU DON'T HAVE AN A4LD

Confusion may arise

because the A4LD can use the same filter and pan gasket as the 5R55E used in the 97. Although the older transmission used a metal screen filter, it can now use the MicroFelt filter now that the design has a larger filter area. When changing the filter be sure to transfer the old O-rings if new ones are not supplied and be sure to use new mounting hardware if supplied. Some filters used a longer bolt and a large flat washer on the plastic. Evidently a high torque may have cracked the plastic sometimes. A shorter bolt and/or spacer is now used to tighten on the rivet. This bolt is recessed and it may not be obvious that it has bottomed out without securing the filter. Be sure to use Mercon V.

Who are you going to believe, Fram or the people that built your explorer (FORD)? Look in your Owner's manual. The only transmissions listed on page 223 are 5-speed manual, 4R70W and 5R55E. Fram did not build your Explorer.

I think that what Jim Abena is saying here is that you don't have an A4LD. I would have to second that as well ;)

LOL :D

Okay, so I guess I don't have an A4LD.

The only filter and gasket that was available was the one fram says is for a A4LD. Somebody said it also fits the 5ree so that is fine I guess.

My axle code is "46". Is this a limited slip? What type of fluid do I need.

I don't have an owner's manual with this so I can't look up all the helpful info like you guys.

If you got time....

Order the top of the line SPX MicroFelt filter from www.bulkpart.com for only $10. They have the patent on the design and this is the OEM the car came with. Order a couple for future changes and save even more money. This filter sells at Pep Boys for $23. You do need to order the pan filter seperately, O rings you can transfer. With the money you save, you can buy the ATSG 5R55E manual for $16 and then you can make others here feel stupid with this great compost of knowledge. Revenge can be sweet!

I'm pretty sure that you have an open diff.

If you search here for "axle codes" you should be able to find it.

The autozone.com website has the same info as the Chilton manual does. If you follow this link, you can see a chart with the trans refill capacity

Also, you can download an owners manual for your 97 from Ford ownerconnection.com
