I recently put 20" rims on my 03 Mountaineer and I have noticed a change in the ride. I have 265 50 R20 tires and the ride is a little rougher than with the factory wheels. What could I do to smooth out the ride? Would different shocks help?

265/50/20 is only available in a high performance tire(i.e. rough riding). You could switch to say a 275/45/20 Goodyear Eagle LS or similar touring tire and smooth it up a little. Any time you lose sidewall height you are going to get a rougher ride.

You could also try lowering the air pressure in the tires.

Get smaller wheels or get used to it riding like ****.

Why people do **** like this without thinking about the effect it's going to have is beyond me.....

welcome to the site corey, loosing sidewall is going to make it ride like crap at the proepr air pressure.... you can either put more sidewall, or lower the air pressure to soften the ride, but lowering the air pressure too much is dangerous and it might still not get you near how plush you want it to be, thats the problem with all the bling, is the crappy ride... or lift it and put some 40" tires on it with 20s, then the ride will feel about equal to a stock tire on stock rims

Big wheels and short sidewall tires ride very rough; just the nature of the beast.

low profile...

Shocks wont help too much.. the only way to really improve the ride you will need a higher profile tire like a 265 65 20. You dont have enough tire sidewall to absorb road impact.. Do not lower the air pressure on low pros... it only takes one good bump in the road to ruin the wheels and a lower pressure will make that a more likely scenario..
