I recently completed a rebuild of the sohc 4.0 in my 2000 Ford Explorer. There were no issues past low power and low oil pressure. no knocks or damaged internal components. I simply changed the rings, bearings and timing components (for the second time in 2 years).

On first start up the engine ran well and had no issues. After a couple of minutes it began to run rough. After a couple of days it threw a code (I didn't get the code) but it was related to a rich condition on bank one. I had been trouble shooting the rough idle for a couple of days before the check engine light came on and was unable to identify the cause. No vacuum leaks or bad plugs.

Now, I'm not a mechanic but I am somewhat mechanically inclined. Having said that, during the reassembly I put the balance shaft gear on the crank backwards. The gear has an indention that the harmonic balancer slides back into. My brother noticed the issue when we were putting the balancer back on preparing to put the motor back in the car.

In order to turn that gear back around we had to pull the Timming cover and remove the gear but in order to pull the gear I had to lobster the jack shaft bolt and pull the timing gear to the left (driver side) cam gear. When I did this I put the tool onto that gear and the TDC tool on the balancer. Listened up what I had to to get the gears right and put it back together.

I never checked the passenger side (bank 1) to make sure it hadn't moved during the process. Question is if the bank 1 cams moved just a little would/could it create the rich code on bank one and can I simply put the tool on the #1 side and the TDC tool on and re set the cam on that side?

I really think that is my problem. It real no well at speed and really runs well around 70 mph but the rough idle is unbearable. Any advise will be helpful.
