I just bought my ex within the past month and have had issues now with the sunroof leaking in hard rain and I would just like some suggestions on it.

and yes it is closed all the way.

I have the headliner out (again). The first time I noticed the rear drain tube was pinched as it curved down the C pillar, that didnt fix it.

Then I noticed that the front edge was a lot tighter to the roof than the back edge so I adjusted the position of the glass in the roof.
Now I still see that seal wet and water leaking in around the back, but I dont know if its too much water coming in or what?
I am wondering if the seal is just smashed over the years and not sealing like its supposed to.

I know that some water is supposed to come in, but I dont know if I have another issue.

Thanks for the reply

The seal isn't supposed to be watertight so that won't cause a leak like you describe.

Those tubes often get blocked with debris and will cause the tray to overflow. Have you checked if water drains out from each corner of the tray? On mine 3 of the 4 lines were blocked.

Right I know that there are not supposed to be water tight but I feel as if there may be too much of a gap that so much water comes in and that the drains can handle it.

I would try and pour some water down the drains and see of they work, if they do, you might be right with the possibility that the drains can't handle the amount of water coming through, but that is very uncommon. on my Explorer when I got it 2 of the drains fell off of the trays completely, over the years due to heat cycles the tube became very soft and sort of expanded, so they just fell off ever time, I put them back on with a band clamp just to be sure, haven't had a problem yet.

Yea the drains are 110% clear one was very slightly loose so I put a clamp on it just in case but that is not the side it leaks from. But I adjusted the sunroof so the gap is more even front to back. SO we will find out in the rain storm tonight.
It is also not the greatest adventure driving around with out a headliner.

just to add in I went through the car wash with no issues, but when i got home i soaked the roof with the hose. I then drove it to the angle part of my driveway, so all the water thats on the roof would run off. This is where I got wet from the drivers rear part of the sunroof just dripped right on my head. Any ideas?

This all sounds similar to what I dealt with. If I parked nose down, the center console and drivers seat would get soaked.

I pulled the headliner down and used some kind of sealant on each screw of the luggage rack. I haven't had an issue since then.

hmm that does give me an idea because i did just change out the mounting bars for the luggage rack. thank you for that

No worries :) good luck on solving the issue. Mine drove me nuts for quite a while.

So I swapped with a glass from the junk yard being that it is discontinued. But now my leak is entirely different and worse. I'm pulling my hair out with this thing.
First when I nosed down water running down the roof would leak in from the drivers rear corner of the sunroof.
Now once the water comes in it runs right off the back of the track. And still think there is too much water coming in from around the glass but I don't know.

I am just going to try a whole new assembly, and this better work. I need it to go on a little road trip this weekend. If it doesn't then I am going to permanently close it.

Can anyone post pictures of the gap between the sunroof and the gap on yours if you have it. 2000 to 2002 and yes I know 2001 to 2002 is the new body style but it is the same sunroof. This sunroof actually goes up to 05. Or if you can measure the gap of he opening that would be nice too. Thanks

Anyone? pictures please??

Alight so with all of the wonderful suggestions JK...
I have fixed the leak
After 3 different assemblies and 4 different pieces of glass because the seal comes with the glass, my fix was the free one for me. Which was to swap the one from my 99 which is totally different design and the gasket was that much thicker that it sealed it up. An yes the sunroof that was rolled over still works and seals better then the one that came in my new truck.
One interesting fact is that this sunroof assembly out of my 99 has, believe it or not, GM part numbers all over it. Go figure that one out. Shows you how much each manufacture deals with one another.
but its sealed its done and on to the next project.
