Long story short I had a 99 explorer 4x4 and unfortunately hit a patch of ice and rolled in in a ditch but was able to walk away. I am looking at 2000 ford explorer that has only 54,000 mi on it but is rear wheel drive and wondering how hard or extensive it would be to convert it to 4x4 being that I do have all the parts in stock from my old one. It is still able to run and drive, but the body is a little mangled. So if anyone could be nice and give me some insight on this.

certainly it can be done, but it would be more work than it's worth to me. a short list of things that come to mind...

- technically engine is different, but would work okay (4x4 SOHC engine had a balance shaft).
- transmission/t-case swap
- rear drive shaft swap
- PCM swap
- wiring harness transplant
- radio bezel 4x4 switch transplant
- GEM swap (?)
- power distribution box swap (?)
- install front diff and driveshaft
- front spindle swap with hubs and rotors
- rear diff gear swap (assuming ratios are different)

sounds like a lot of work. easier to find another 4x4 or swap the bodies.

Yes thank you definitely an option but a lot of work.
