2000 Explorer and Mountaineer's the same???

When I mean the same I mean exactly the same, Tranny, Transfer, Brakes, Plugs and so forth. Also, the Mountaineers look like they are all on 15inch rims what's gives there? Maybe not the towing ability of an Explorer? I'm only looking at V8's too.

Yes, same truck, same assembly plant, parts interchange (minus front headlights, grille, bumper)

Go with the Mounty. The front ends look cooler and you can rent U-Haul trailers :

Besides who wants to have a boring Explorer like everyone else when you can have a one of a kind Mounty

The wheel size does not make a difference. It's the tires that make the difference. You do not want a passenger tire (P) you want a light truck tire (LT) Plenty of Explorers have 15" wheels.

Yes I know that about tires! Why the smaller rims on the Mountaineer? What size tire do you recommend for 15inch? I haven't delt much with 15 inch tires in a long time.

Tires are always cheaper for a 15inch rim

Any size tire that will fit on your explorer will fit 15 inch rim just fine, depends what you are looking for, ( a street tire, mud terrains, all terrain, etc.)

A 30x9.5x15 or 31x10.5x15.

A smaller wheel gives a better ride due to more sidewall. Mountaineers were marketed as more of a luxury SUV.

Get factory 16" tear drop wheels and 255/70R15 tires (30"x9.5") They're about 1.4" oversize from the stock 235/75R15's that the Mounty's come with. Look good, fit stock and the slight oversize tire yielded the best MPG's for me and my V8 (got almost 22 mpg driving to Nashville this summer.)
