2000 explorer steering problem

yeah i know this is probably in the wrong place but im a new member and there is a problem with my 2000 explorer. (this unit is not modified at all) when going slow turning and sometimes under breaking, the steering wheel shimmys and shakes. my step dad had said something about the power steering pump. could he be right or is there something else that could be wrong? any help with be sweet even a URL that has info on this subject.
and if need be please move my post to the correct place.

Try this:
Open the cap on your power steering pump resovoir (spellin sux)
Have a helper turn your wheels left all the way, right all the way a good ten times. You should notice air bubbles coming out of the fluid. Kepp turning back and forth until air bubbles stop.

could a binding cv axle cause this?
remember going slow, i havent gotten it up to a highway speed (no more then 15KM/H)

Yep, a cv axle on its last leg could definately act like this. That is a VERY easy thing to check, go turn the wheels to the side and look at the boots, if they are ripped or spewing grease then, yeah its dead

i just put those cv axles in, i have an old hub that is still good so i might try that tomorrow.

so when i had the explotion on the jack stands today i tryed to get air out of the steering system if there was any. when i was turning the wheels (vehicle on) on the third time i turned the wheel to the right the whole truck started to shake violently (wheels(back and forth) motor and steering wheel) untill i turned off the vehicle.
so i think ive established that my problem is not in the drive line.
anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, so, heres what you do. Go back outside.. take that Exploder off the jackstands, placing the wheels on the ground. Then try to get the air out of the rack as outlined before. It is of the utmost importance that the wheels be on the ground, what you just did made the situation worse. Do Not Lift The Front End When Doing This.
