2000 Explorer V8 AWD tranny problems

The problem started a couple of weeks ago with a slightly delayed 2-3 shift. I changed the filter and fluid, there were some super fine particles on the magnet but the fluid looked good (made no change). Then today the problem turned into no shift beyond second, so I guess my question is should I try a valve body rebuild or go straight to the shop for a rebuild?

Vehicle has 134000 miles with regular service being done.

I was also wondering if there is any advantage to the performance kit over the basic rebuild kit from Transgo

I found the spring in the 3rd accumulator broken, wound up installing this kit from Transgo along with the spring from Ford (E0AZ-7F285-A)
