Hi, I have a 2000 explorer XLS that won't start when the outside temperature is to hot. Starts and runs fine when outside temp is cool but when hot nothing.
When I turn the key it does nothing. Doesn't try to turn over no clicking just silence. The lights and radio work fine.
It has the V6
Any help is very much appreciated
Thanks

try simplest things first

Below is the electrical diagram for your starting circuit.

I assume that you have cleaned the battery terminals and the battery is fully charged.
1. Make sure the voltmeter reads correctly in ON and START.
2. Select N instead of P. Also, try raising and lowering the shift selector slightly in both positions to see if that makes a difference.
3. Swap the Starter Motor Relay in the Battery Junction Box with the Blower Motor Relay in the Battery Junction Box.
4. Firmly tap the starter motor with something heavy (avoid any electrical connectors).
5. Check the electrical connectors to the starter and starter solenoid.
6. Remove starter and have the starter and solenoid tested.

The battery does need replaced and I plan on doing so but my problem seems to only happen when outside air temp is hot. Would the battery cause that?

Replaced battery still did not fix. Removed starter and had tested at parts house and tester good. Dis some more investigation and was reading 0 volts at the ignition cable at starter.
Can get truck to start after some wiggling of key and cylinder.
Could this be a ignition switch or cylinder problem? Which one?
