2000 Ford Explorer XLT
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT with a 4.0L SOHC. About a week ago I started it, put it in reverse, started backing down the driveway. She died and I haven't been able to start her since.

I have installed new upper and lower intake gaskets, an IAC control valve and a new crankshaft position sensor. No luck. It was an occasional hard starter before and from other posts it seemed that the above fixes would take care of it.

When I am cranking it, if I stand on the gas it almost starts. It goes chug-a-chug and speeds up a little but never quite catches. This almost start is maddening. It is getting both spark and gas.

Did my cam timing chain skip a tooth? What do I do now?

I would appreciate any input.

do you hear any "slapping" sounds coming from the engine when you crank it over? a 00 Explorer SOHC i owned year and half ago did what you are describing. it just died one day and when i cranked it a loud slapping noise was heard, turned out that the front chain had broken tensioners and the chain was slapping against the inside of the valve cover when i was cranking it. it would chug like you are describing but it would never start. you prob have a toasted engine, if your timing jumped you may as well start looking for a replacement motor, which will be a ***** trying to find a good runnin SOHC with no timing chain issues...almost impossible.

fuel pressure & compression?

I suggest that you measure the fuel pressure and the compression. Low compression on all cylinders on one bank usually means that camshaft timing chain has broken or slipped. Low compression on all cylinders means the primary (crankshaft to jackshaft) chain has broken or slipped.

before you get into deep engine work, listen for the fuel pump if its working then go on

All great advice ..listen to these guys .
You should hear the pump when you first turn the key to on.
