2000 ranger axle stuck in tranny

my rear u joint broke yesterday and snapped the end of my drive shaft and the end of the flange off was going to get a new drive shaft made but the old one will not slip out of the back of the tranny all i hear is a loud thud when i pull any ideas and how easy would it be to pull the tail off the transmission to check all this out?

I just want to clear up a terminology error. What you're calling an "axle" is actually your drive shaft.
