My nieghbor has a 2000 Ranger 4wd 5sp that will not start. I went over everything I could think of, he has already replaced the starter. Only thing I can think of is the Clutch/starter interlock switch. According the the manual it should be easy to replace but does not show the exact location. Also was curious as to how we could bypass this to make sure that is the problem. Thank you!

On my 93, it's clipped onto the clutch pedal.

I'd also check battery terminals for looseness or corrosion.

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your answer and welcoming me to the forum. Although my neighbor is an aircraft mechanic he knows nothing about vehicles. Now that I know where the switch is located I have read that to bypass this swith there are 2 wires both red and light blue in color, and that I should connect these two together to complete the circuit and make it look like the clutch is depressed. Is this correct? Thank you!

Also we did check the battery connections, etc. when you turn the key to start everything works as it should fuel pump, etc. everything is working as it should just doesnt start. Had to help him replace thermostat on his wifes car last night.

If you find and unclip the switch, you'll see how it works. There's a spring in it that compresses when the clutch is pushed in. Rather than splicing wires, you can just put a zip tie thru the clip to hold it in the compressed position.

It's also possible the connection points are coated with dirt or something, and just need to be cleaned. This happened on my brake light switch once, it's very similar to the clutch switch.

ok i will give this a shot ..i have a 93 Ranger that would do the samething it would turn over but wouldnt run i replaced the EMC or ECM relay on the box on the driverside wheele well (how i figured that out is i pulled the relay and knocked it a few times plugged it back in and it fired right up.

I had the same problem with my 99 Ranger and though it was the switch also, even a ford mechanic did also, but it was an programed key. Check the THEFT light on the dash, if it is blinking you might be trying to start it with a key not programed into the system. Try all additional keys you might have for the truck. If you have 2 good keys it is an easy thing to program. if not you must go to a stealership to get it done. Or you might have a bad module.

Good luck, please post the resolution to the problem for future reference.

99 ford danger ranger won't turn over

1999 4.0L 5 speed 4x4 Ranger

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, i have an issue, I am a weekend mechanc so i know enough to be dangerous on cars.

I have a 99 ford ranger with a 4.0L engine, 5 speed, and 4 wheel drive.

I got gas recently and went to start my truck and nothing. Just wouldn't turn over.

After tring several times, it finally did turn over and run fine.

I got home and same thing.

Here is a list of things i have done.

When i turn the key over to start i do not hear any clicks from the relays under the hood. This is when i do not have the clutch pedal pushed in.

When i push the clutch pedal in, and try to start, i hear the starter relay click in the hood but nothing happens.

I changed the battery, put a brand new one it and same thing.

so i get a test light out and pull the starter off.

I have power going to the soleniod when the key is turned over. So i am getting power to the starter and solenoid.

I took the starter in and had it tested. Of course it test fine and both parts stores confirmed the starter worked.

I know the engine is not locked up, i can push the truck down the rode and pop the clutch and she'll fire right up.

Any help would be great.

thanks

I've got a 1994 Ranger with similar issues. My foot slipped off the clutch when I tried starting it the other day, and I haven't been able to start it since. I've replaced the solenoid/starter and still can't get it started. I am getting power from the battery (all lights, radio, etc are on).

When I replaced the starter, I noticed a wire coming from the positive side of the battery (bundled with the one connected to the solenoid) wasn't attached to anything. I've now concluded that it should be connected to the clutch pedal switch......I just can't find it!! The connector at the end of the wire is similar to the one for the solenoid (a loop at the end for sliding over a bolt, then secured by a nut).....but as I mentioned, I can't for the life of me find where it is supposed to attach. The manual also says the clutch pedal switch is attached to the clutch master cylinder (also a mystery to me where it is)

Any ideas....or better yet, anyone have a picture or know how to describe its location? Thanks in advance for your help!

You can find the clutch pedal switch attached to the arm of the clutch pedal. Stick your head under the dash, it clips onto the arm right beind the pedal, and has 3 (I think) wires running to it.

Maybe it fell off or got mis-aligned when your foot slipped off.

...Here is a pic of it in post #5...:D

I have a 2000 2wd Ranger that I parked many miles from home at a client's home and when I went to start it at 9:00 last evening, it wouldn't turn over. Went through the usuals...jumped battery, but didn't think this was a problem anyway because interior light was super bright. Tried to push start---no luck. The key is programmable and a replacement. It has worked great...no problems. However last night I noticed that when I tried to start the theft light was flashing. It flashes all the time when the car is parked and key is out. But it seemed to flash faster when I tried to start with key. Under the hood I noticed hydraulic fluid around fuse block on DS wheel well. The reservoir for clutch has fluid in, but appears to be low. I didn't know at the time where the interlock switch was located, so couldn't check that.

However, when the clutch is depressed, I was able to see the throwout bearing moving through the window in bottom of bellhousing when viewing boot was removed.

Any ideas???

I'm going to sound like a recording. But my 93 would not engage starter. After having the battery tested Twice, and the starter once. And everything tested out fine. I found that one of the 3 wires going into the postive terminal ,was broke internally. The cables looked fine, and when I tested battery clamp I had 12 volts, but when I inserted tip of probe into cable, I had nothing. I cut the cables and put a replacement clamp on.
