HELP......Some how my explorer has engaged the 4 wheel drive system and is stuck in 4h. The nob says its in auto but when i drive it you can feel that it is locked in. when you drive it you can feel it and hear it in the tires,i am afraid to drive it over 40 mph because its like i put the switch in 4h.I have tried the switch and i can go to 4l and hear it going in and back to 4h and hear it go out,but when i go to auto and drive it it is still in 4h.I have put it up on stands and in the auto position the drivers front wheel still spins when i give it gas.when i spin the right front tire it also spins the front drive shaft.I have taken out the front shaft and didnot help at all..i have eliminated the shift motor because it goes in and out of 4l no problem.please if anyone can give me some ideas that would be great..i just want it out of 4wh....thanks

Wish I knew 4WD systems. I haven't had problems so I have not searched this site for info. The only thing I could tell you is let it sit in a warm garage while you search. Good luck.

I am having the exact same problem with my 99 sport tonight.. I was driving it through snow and showing off last week and now its stuck in 4hi.. From what I have read so far is that the connectors to the t-box are dirty and most likely wet and stuffed with snow and need to be cleaned out so they don't short out.. I wouldnt really worry about driving tho.. I went 90 on the NJ turnpike this past wknd and all is fine.. its just wet connectors down by the transfer box>> I hope

Could be your transfer case having issues. Assuming you have the BW 4405 tcase, could be the 4x4 engagement mechanism inside the tcase (not the shift motor).

thanks alot i will try checking tran case and see what happens.oh boy...anymore advice would be great.

I had something similar happen to my 97. In my case, one of the speed sensors was not working properly and the computer decided there was slippage and decided to send power to the t-case (has an electric clutch).

I did two things to fix the issue, first I pulled the sensors out and cleaned them up (there was a bunch of sludge on it). That seemed to help. Then I did the "brown wire" mod, described on this forum somewhere so that I could override the Auto 4wd completely. Do a search for it.

Of course, this all assumes you have the same type of t-case and system.

Edit: here's the "brown wire mod" thread http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149388&highlight=brown+wire+mod

Where on the TCase is the speed sensor located? I think mine could use a cleaning.
