OK good stuff. I dont have to worry about any additive. Just getting the fluid and getting it done. Off to the store. Need RTV, Amsoil Oil (one quart heavy weight, then 80W90 for the rest). Dont know if I will do it tonight, since I want to pull the cover off and really drain it. I can atleast get everything I will need.

Thanks to everyone that helped with this thread. This is yet another topic I was completly clueless about and now I am much more knowledable and able to service this aspect of my truck.

Thanks!!!!

Kyle

actually, with a lot of the full-synthetic gear lubes out now-a-days, limited-slip additive isn't necessary, as the lubes already have them.

And it is a quick easy process. But as Al stated, make sure the fill plug is NOT frozen before you pull the cover! And when pulling the cover, it is best to NOT drive a screwdriver, chisel, etc, to pry the cover off. This can cause enough damage to the mating surfaces and cause leaks.

Obviously, may need to do a little prying, just be VERY careful not to damage it too much. And if anywhere, do the slight prying at the top; less chance of leaking if something does go wrong.

After draining and cleaning, don't forget to use a scraper to get off all the old silicon sealant from the mating surfaces. Then clean both surfaces well (I used brake parts cleaner sprayed onto a rag).
After applying RTV and when bolting the cover back on, just like your tires, tighten bolts in a star-type fashion. Also just really need to get them snug, not too tight. Then wait a couple hours before re-filling, to let the silicon cure.

OK, got three quarts of Amsoil Severe Gear SAE 75W-90 and a tube of Mega Black O.E.M. High Temp Silicone Gasket.

Since the Mega Black has a 12-24 hour cure time, I will probably save this until I get my next day off. Which probably wont be until next saturday haha. But, I have everything I need so its just a matter of making the time to do it.

Thanks for all the info guys, I really appreciate it.

I would think that a large flat knife would be the perfect tool for seperating the cover. It would allow you to slip between the two halves without damaging them and also would slice the current gasket. Just a thought. Although I am not even sure I have my big knife anymore haha.

no need to wait 12-24 hrs. I used the black stuff when re-assembling my t-case, and only let it set for 2hrs or so and no leaking occured.

But of course, it certainly won't hurt to give it the full cure time
