2000 XLS
Good day! I have a 2000 XLS and have had stalling problms in the past. The truck would stall when idling. I came to find out that it was the idle air controller.

I took the part of and cleaned it well with brake cleaner and the problem seemed to stop. A while later the truck now seems to be hesitating when slightly accelerating. I do not notice it when Pressing firmly on the gas or accelerate heavily. I thought that it may have been the fuel filter, so I replaced it and it still happens. The truck has 80k on it. Also, it is a 6 cylinder.

Could the idle air controller be causing this even though it is not at "idle"? I tried using fuel injector cleaner and installing a new air cleaner. Most shops here want to charge a minimum of $100 to look at it and they cannot guaruntee that it will be fixed.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hank, three things come to mind. One is the IAC, which you already suspect. It's possible that it could be sticking and causing the hesitation. It might also be a dirty MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor). You can do a search and learn how to clean it, but be very careful, new ones are expensive.

The third thing, and the one that I would suspect is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). It is a variable resistor that tells the PCM the throttle setting. They are a wear item, and are relatively inexpensive. If you have a multimeter, they are easy to check. Do a search and you will find lots of info on these too.

Thank you for the quick, informative response! I will check those this weekend and post back!

Have you replaced your plugs and wires yet? If not, I would soon.....

I replaced the plugs thus far, the wires seemed to be in good shape, but I will replace them soon.

The problem seems to be fuel related, when I step on the gas, it does not seem to desitate. I know that the over the counter injector cleaners are not that great and that my injectors may be dirty, but I would lkie to try to reolve the issue, hopefully, by myself because I would hate to get a wrong diagnostic and be charged for something that did not fix the problem.

Your throttle cable may be loose. There is a thread about how to do the throttle cable mod/fix, very recent in this or the under the hood forum
