On my wife's 2000 explorer XLT. 4.0, 2WD, 4Dr. 62,000 miles. The tempature guage was showing hot last Sunday and I replaced the Thermostat and that fixed the problem. She drove the vehicle to work Mon. and Tue. with NO problems what so ever. Then on Wed. she tells me it is making a chirping noise ever so often. Well, now it is making a loud chirping noise when first started up and then it usually goes away after driving it for a few minutes other than an occasunal chirp.
It was due an oil change Sat. so I asked the mech. what he thought it might be and he said he was 150% sure it was the Camshaft Posistion Sensor (CPS). He said they are common to make that noise on explorers and he replaces about one a month. He said it would not hurt to continue to drive the vehicle but that the noise would get worse and not better. He wants 250 + bucks to replace the sensor.
I wanted a second opinion so I called the local Ford Dealership and talked with a maintanance rep., granted he did not hear the noise and he said that I would have to leave the vehicle with him over night so he coiuld hear the noise in the morning. But he said it is more than likely the belt. He said I may have spilled some antifreeze on the belt when I change out the thermostat. He suggested spraying the belt with WD-40 and seeing if the sound stopped. The belt is only two months old, I wouldn't think WD-40 would be good to spray on the belt. I did spray some water on it and it had no effect on the noise.
Is this something simple or could it be the water pump going out or a pully going bad. I am NO mechanic and I am concerned about my wife and daughter's well being out on the road. I also don't want to be taken advantage of. The man at the Ford Dealership said it is NOT common for the Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS) to squeel on Explorers. He said they rarely change them out at the Ford place. So who is telling the truth?
What now, pay the 250 + or is it something simple that I can fix myself?
Thank you for your help.
