any ideas? it comes on sometimes, but most of the times it is out alltogether. I doubt it is the speaker, any ideas? Common problem?

i really hate to replace the factory head unit for all I use it for

This is 'prally too late, but I'm brand spankin' so I'll tell you anyway. My '98 XLT has done this driver door in/out thing since I can remember, but it never bothered me since it was the wifes daily driver, but now that I have inherited it, it drives me absolutely mad. I have replaced the front door speakers. still cutting out. I have recently noticed when it cuts out, i can jack the volume and turn it down fast it will come back on. I am still trying to figure out if it the HU or the external amp that isn't supposed to be in the '98 & up models. Unless you have got the high speed premium stuff, yours doesn't have an external amp. Which is leading me to believe that I need a new reciever. I am planning to install a new reciever in the next week or so anyhow. I'l let you know if this does the trick

Its the factory Amp, you need to get a bypass harness and i would definently suggest getting a new Headunit to power the speaker because the factory one is not powerful enough.

But the '00 would definatly be internally amplified, right?

im not sure, i have a 97 and with my stock stereo the amp went out, i thought the 00 had an amp too. mabye im wrong :(

From what I've read here, it looks like '97 was the las year ford supposedly used ext amps, but I guess ford had a few left laying around so they installed them ( another one of Fords better ideas). What kind of symptoms did yours show when the amp failed?

it popped in and out and if i would concentrate all the sound to the front/left it would sound really grainy and awful, then pop into normal sounding then go out again...while i was parked so i dont think it was a short
