2000 XLT Front window motor

My passenger side front window will not roll up, I am looking for detailed instructions, I believe there are 3 bolts holding the motor in place. 2 of the screws can be removed through hole in the panel. if I remove those 2 the motor "loosens" so there must be at least a 3rd screw. the bad part is I can't locate my Haynes manual (if this is even covered). there is an indention in the door right where I would think the 3rd screw is but I don't want to go drillin' without knowin'.

I got my problem worked out, using a dental mirror I looked inside the door found the bolt I needed to remove, it was behind a dimple located towards the hinges. I drilled a 1/2" hole and removed the last screw. The motor was a bear to break loose from the actuator, once removed the window would go up and down using man power and the motor would spin out of the X. I reinstalled the motor and got lucky on the alignment. The window is working almost normally now.

The window works perfectly as long as the drivers door is closed, if the drivers door is open the passenger window will not do anything (like it is locked), the back windows work normally as does the drivers when the drivers door is open. the other 3 doors seem to have no effect on this.

any ideas?

Perhaps???

Wires pinched....short in the harness....bad ground....trace the wires along its length.

The window works perfectly as long as the drivers door is closed, if the drivers door is open the passenger window will not do anything (like it is locked), the back windows work normally as does the drivers when the drivers door is open. the other 3 doors seem to have no effect on this.

PS.........BTW.....does it only do this from a particular switch??? Like when using the driver's door master switch.....vs......when using that particular doors switch (rt rear, left rear or passenger frt).

Cause, if the problem only happens from the drivers master switch..........I'd be looking there.

it does it from either the master or the passenger door, the back doors seem to be unaffected. I am going to check the wiring harness I suspect there is an open in a wire that closes when the harness gets pushed upon closing the drivers door and opens when the harness pulls from opening the drivers door.

also the window worked for about 10 cycles, the it stuck in the down position again, I can't find anything visually out of whack, so I am lubricating the tracks hoping for a binding issue near the bottom of the track.

Well it looks like some of the windings in the power window motor are open, there is 12Volts across the motor but it doesn't spin every time, it worked for about 5 iterations this time. when I took it out and powered it disconnected from the window it goes "down" direction just fine (clockwise), it went in the "up" direction (counterclockwise) one time before dieing again and it is dead now...no spin counterclockwise with voltage across the motor. so it's new motor time.

I'll check the cable this weekend when I have a small break from my 2 kids (wife works nights this weekend). but at least the window is up for the rain we are suppossed to get this weekend in east tennessee.

I really appreciate your help, I already was thinking the same thing on the screwy problem but it was nice to have a 2nd person think it also.

Yup........direct connection to 12v source and it doesn't work (all the time)........so, it's time to replace or rebuild it.

Did you have to reverse polarity, to make it go up vs. down?? Or, did it switch from up, to down on it's own........as it came to the end of travel?

Just curious about how that motor is made to work.

Prices are from $56-78..........if you want on-line parts. Then again if you get it locally, the core hassle problem is eliminated.

Actually it is not a +12V -12V kinda setup, there are 2 wires that run to the motor when you press the button one direction there is +12V across one wire nothing (less than 1/2 Volt) across the other, if you push the button the other way the +12 and the 1/2 volt switch wires. Sp is the casing on the motor ground or is it somehow switching the wires from +12 to ground therfore reversing polarity, I'll have to check across the wires just to satisfy curiousity and will report back.

to be honest though, I may not have had a good ground, I just grounded to the door latch post, so the voltage readings may not be exactly right but they should be close.

it is correct that the polarity effects the up / down.

Positive on one side is up, then just switch sides for the down.

I ordered a new motor from www.rockauto.com, they were extremely helpful and polite when I called. I will definitely keep them on my list of good links. Another is www.wheelsandcaps.com, I busted a stock wheel on my way to the beach last year. Long story short 1 caliper assembly bolt backed out, the other acted as a convenient hinge point when I braked on I75S in montgomery Alabama the caliper assembly busted the crap out of my wheel. they don't hold air with 5 quarter sized holes in the wheel. anyway the www.wheelsandcaps.com guys got me a newly manufactured replacement that looks identical and acts identical to the OEM wheel. the guy I talked to there claims they manufacture the wheels for Ford, I don't know if I believe him but the wheel looks and performs like it was always on the X.

Got the new motor in, the window works fine now, I lost one of the bolts and have to scrounge around to find another before closing everything up. Also, the intermittent problem with the window only working when the driver door is shut is only affecting the window in the up position now, I can roll it down with the drivers door open or not. So I guess I will take the drivers door back apart and check the wires for sure.

Found the culprit! problem #1 was a bad motor, problem #2 was on the master switch panel (in the drivers door) the Brown wire with the blue stripe had an open as was expected when the door is open, was fine when the door was closed. Today the wire actually broke enough filaments that there is 12 volts on the switch but only 7 volts past the partial brake in the wire. I will replace the wire and hope all will be fixed.

ran a new wire had to drill a small hole in the door and the boot between the door and the body to run the wire, it is fixed and all problems are gone.

I was traveling thru KC and stopped to take a pic of the stadiums with my rear pass. window down. when i tried to raise it, it wouldnt go up. neither switch at pass side or driver door would close it. so i suspected it was the motor. and since only one window didnt work, i ruled out a fuse. i had to drive to the nearest dealership (avoiding any rain that day) and finally found one with a new motor in columbia. after a half hour, they came and told me it wasnt the motor. that saved me 117 for that, but i was told it was the master switch in the driver door. so for $100 for switch and half hour labor..totaling $160, it was fixed. not sure if it was just a simple cleaning and in fact they put a new master switch in, but i paid to have it work nonetheless and needed it work. i didnt want to screw up the door panel removing it myself and didnt want to take the chance. so it was worth it. the window works. what i was wondering was, is this common that a window all of a sudden stops working (especially with the window down)? I was worried i was going to have to spend the night in the car as it was packed with all my stuff and didnt want thiefs stealing stuff over night. i had no choice.

Yup...........almost same story on a trip, when a window failed to go back, "up."

Drove all night to get home (safety).

I was having problems with switches before............and as it turned out, I ended up changing all of my switches (including the door lock switches). Now, they all work wonderfully.
