We are having a problem with the power seat in our 2001 Mountaineer. At first we thought it was the switch, but turns out that that isn't the problem.

The motor tries to move the seat but it acts like it is in a bind and only moves half the time. Tried oiling the tracks, but didn't help much. Sometimes tapping in a direction with a hammer will make it start moving.

Thinking either the motor is weak or there is something wrong with the tracks.

Has anyone had this issue? If so, what was the way to remedy it?

If the tracks look good and everything that moves is oiled lightly greased (around NLGI #0), I'd suspect the motor bushings, commutator or brushes. If it can be non-destructively opened, and it looks like there is a way to hold the brushes in position for reassembly, that's what I'd try next.

You might also measure the voltage at the motor. The switch could be causing high resistance due to old/tarnished internal contacts, and dropping voltage too much at the motor. Jumpering around the switch to test, should reveal that.

get a working junkyard driver's side rack with motors and replace. They have been on ebay as well for about $100. Get the driver's side, they are not interchangeable.
