I have a 2001 ford ranger xlt that i need to get a 2nd ignition key for. Ford dealer tells me they can cut a new key from VIN# however the key will need to be programed. Can i do this or does it have to be done by the dealer? Thanks for any help you can give me. mikesbubba

You will need two working PATS keys before you can program the module yourself to accept any more keys. Since you only have one, you will have to go to a dealer or locksmith.

It would be a smart move to get a third key made now along with the second. That way, you will not be at the mercy of the dealer if you lose one.

A car alarm dealer is another source for duplicate keys, and they're usually much cheaper than the Ford dealer too.

Your Owner's Manual explains how to program an ignition key. Really easy - the rate the dealers charge is highway robbery!
