:fire: Ok so my 4x4 high light was blinking and I brought it to a local shop thats been around for 15 years.
1. they replaced the "switches" $188---that didn't fix it. In fact then it was starting out in 4x4 low and was hearring a clicking sound under the glove box. brought it back.
2. They replaced the Transfer case encoder and motor$537 (with out calling me and telling me)That didn't work, and now NO 4x4 at all. Brought it back.
3. "Unable to gain communication with module"- said it was a bad ground. No charge. They said I needed a new module and ordered one.
4. New module would not work, rewired a new ground $195 (without telling me)
As of today NO 4x4 drive at all, will not engage.
Took it, along with all my paper work to Ford and here is what they said:
02-04 have had a problem with the softwhere going out in the modules. He has NEVER seen a transfercase and motor go bad. he said they didn't know what was happining so they where just throwing parts at it. The module that they ordered probably didn't work because durring the production of the 02 X's they changed the module. If the 11th charactor in the vin is a "U" then it was the first mod. If it a "z" then it was the second.

Now HELP PLEASE. I have only paid the shop for the switches ($188) and nothing else, because they haven't fixed the problem OR told me how much it was going to be BEFORE doing the work.
Does anyone now about this "softwhere problem"? or If a shop is LEGALLY requred to tell you how much a job is BEFORE they do it? I have also never gotten any old parts back.
Thanks for all that respond.
I have talked with the BBB but they are not a member.
P.S. I live in Oregon :fire:

In NY shops are not allowed to do any work without authorization first. If you didn't approve it, you shouldn' pay for it.

they should have you sign an estimate form and if any thing different from that they need to call you,,

One reason i like bringing my vehicle to ford is they can diagnose the problem easier than a local shop without any knowlege of late model fords My 2002 I could never bring any where but ford dealer.
in fact I just came from there had just one key and they cut and programmed 2 keys for just $37.00
next monday going back for trans flush.

Has anyone heard of the softwere problem?

that shop sounds stupid..... to date i have never heard of anyone having software problems with any of the new explorers.. and i am around on this site a lot..... check with your local state laws... everywhere has differnt laws and warranty.. .call the better business bureau or bureau of automotive repair and file a claim or complaint... see what they say....

that was the ford dealer telling me about the software problems

The GEM may need to be reflashed. That controls the 4x4 and all other things electrical in the Explorer. Have you noticed any other electrical "gremlins" lately?

Just a tidbit of info...

I also had a problem with my 2002 XLT 4x4 Hi lite blinking about 8 months ago, luckly truck was still then under warranty. I took it to a local Ford dealership and they did the warranty work on it. All said and done they replaced $3500.00 worth of parts on it (all fell within the warranty). The original problem they couldn't figure out, they guessed anything from transfer case to switches to computer module to software problems. Well, they replaced all that and no problems since. Hope that was some help, if not, don't ask me, I'm just a Explorer newbie...

No other problems. TP
