got a 2002 explorer with 5r55 tranny, the one with no dipstick. have a shudder while driving # it takes a few seconds when i put it in reverse for it to engage , also seems to slip a little around 60-70 mph. vehicle has 51000 babied miles(wifes car) filter & fluid changed at 30000 by dealer. any ideas what would cause this? thanks in advance for any replies.

Delayed reverse is a pretty common issue in the A4LD and 5R55... and so long as you don't mind waiting for engagement without getting anxious and goosing the throttle prior to engagement, it is not a serious problem. Your slipping at 60-70 and shudder problems can either be fluid related (fluid properties) and/or pressure related.

First recommendation I would make is to get a bottle of Lubegard Green or Platinum and have it added to the fluid. It may solve the shudder problem for you. As for the slipping it could be a fluid pressure issue - which *could* implicate the EPC solenoid. These are a problem child in the 5R55E's, but your history and mileage does not point strongly at this being the culprit, yet the symptomology suggest it *could* be implicated.

Any significant slipping should throw a check engine light as the computer compares RPMS of various components versus each other and knows what the ratios should be.

Welcome to this forum! Your 5R55W uses a solenoid block, so you can't replace the EPC solenoid without replacing the other solenoids as well. Only use Mercon V or full synthetic transmission fluid.
