- 2005 Explorer XLT
Hello guys,
I am new here but certainly not new to truck forums. I currently "inherited" my sister's 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. It has the 4.0L V-6 motor. I have learned that this is the year to stay away from!!!
I also have the nice CRACK in the back tailgate!!!
The truck currently has 121k miles on it. I replaced the transmission at 108k. That is probably no surprise. The V6 has the crap tranny. I also did both front wheel bearings about 1 month ago.
It is running okay now. However I have some concerns:
1.) The "service engine soon" and "check fuel cap" lights keep coming on. I get a PO455 code for a "large Evap leak" I have replaced the fuel cap three times with no luck. I was told this is the solenoid valves for the pressurized fuel tank malfunctioning. I believe one is near the fuel tank and the other under the hood? The mechanic told me to take it to Ford because their scan tool can go in and operate the valves manually and see which one is bad. Is this true? Is there one that is more common to fail that I can replace?
2.) Vibration at 70 mph - I do get some hum from the rear end at around 60 but I have a driveline vibration that will not go away. I can power through it but is you let go of the gas, it comes back and then goes away. I have a feeling I have a bad U-joint on the rear driveshaft...possibly at the transfer case.
3.) Ticking noise under load - This I am most concerned about. I was told this could be the timing set up. There is one on the passenger side back of the motor and one in the front. I really cant tell where the rattling noise is coming from but it is under load when the engine is cold.
Any help or input would be appreciated.
