Driving up the highway today. Dash beeped and msg stated "check temp gauge".
Gauge was pegged at cold. Then shot up to normal and msg went out.
A few minutes later ...same thing. Not a slow 'creeping' movement of the gauge...an instant drop to cold and then an identical instant shot to regular temp. As if a sensor was being unplugged and plugged in again.
Pulled to the side of the road. Coolant level up. I wiggled ECT with two wire plugin..engine died!
Fired right back up wiggled again and it hunted and died again.
Fired it up and drove home.
Checked resistance across terminals of ECT and noted 3.45 at operating temp. Also ran engine at 2000rpm for 2 minutes to ensure proper engine temp.
Code P0118 now exists. Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input.
Dark out now so i'll check voltage reference tomorrow.
I note that the ECT has a clip of some sort that retains it in....not threaded as normal sensors.
Any ideas?? Engine is 4.0 SOHC...........thanks....John
