2002 explorer vs 2000 explorer off-road ability

idk.. the broncoII is an exceptionally capable vehicle in stock form. road manners are vastly more refined in a 02+ explorer but when thrown off the road i think the bronco would prevail. someone needs to make this a poll, lets get some numbers goin on this debate. its posts like this that make this site interesting.

just for fun.. a jeep cherokee lost traction on wet pavement up from where i work and landed on its side in a culvert facing the wrong way. held up traffic for a couple hours. just goes to show ya, jeeps cant make it out of everything! lol

XJ's are very light, they don't do well in wet or snowy weather at speed.

new " BRONCO III or IV " ?????

i like the winch idea up front... thats pretty cool for a production vehicle !!!

but otherwise, it does have that spacey look that would make you not want to take it off road... IMO

BTW for whoever mentioned the ( POLL ) idea for this thread...

good idea:thumbsup:

This thread is amazing! When I first posted my question I expected a few responses, and maybe that the gen 3’s are lousy off road. Instead, I have found out tons of stuff, the gen 3’s don’t totally suck and I unwittingly started a debate that I never expected, but it has been tons of fun. I am still looking and still undecided, but I am much more educated than a week ago. I also think a poll would be fun. Thanks all!!!

ya bro... dont under-estimate 3rd gens !!! - it really just depends on what your needs are for the truck... i couldnt ask anymore from my 3rd gen, its a champ !!!!!

Do you plan on doing anything else with it besides 4 wheeling, like towing, people hauling, traveling?

mostly just hauling my kayaks to the river or the lake, some of the trails to the good put-ins can be a little nasty, espcially to some of the rivers.

Flaws...

Third gens have flaws too... It wouldn't be fair to not list them. Here are two:

1. Exterior pillar paint is rather cheap in quality;
2. The plastic strip on the lift gate with the Ford emblem has a tendency to break, and can cost up to $500.00 to fix...

17 years and ford still has not figured out how to paint those exterior pillars? I thought that was just a problem on my old paint faded 91, not a ford problem.

I have a spare painted and ready to go, LOL.

Ha! I have spare struts, and coilsprings - in case they break. That paint flaw is the work of cheapo... It could be resolved easily.

there is no such thing as having too many spare parts. donner ive been reading your bumper build thread, good stuff. i do have to say you guys have some nice looking 3rd gens.

My wifes '03 XLT had EVERY pillar on the truck re-painted as they all peeled like a sunburrned Playmate. Look great now.

And I hope that our winter this year has MORE snow than last year!!! I'm looking forward to driving my 05 EB through the nasty stuff because I have all the faith in the world that it in its stock form will do better than my 98 Sport last year when it was still BONE stock through the worst winter I remember.

GEN 1, 2 ,or 3..... FORD FTW!!!!

i know this thread has been layin around untouched for a while but i thought id share something

i was driving past the local ford dealership and saw an 09 Explorer XLT Sport, blacked out trim and grille, really nice burnt orage/red color.. only drawback i saw was the name Sport and 20" chrome rims with low pro pirellis. stopped in, put my hand and head up to the window and w/in 10 secs a salesman was walking out with keys and a dealer plate. took it for a 5 mile test drive, drove nice. the last 3rd gen i drove was akward to maneuver but this one wasnt bad at all.

im not a total beleiver, and im deffinetly not paying 30K for an Explorer when i have 2 already, but im slowly realizing they arent that bad.

remember, that stock, the 3gen came out of the factory with more ground clearance than the 2 gen did. The differential is also mounted higher.

I don't think that the lower control arms hanging a bit lower in the IRS are such a problem, because the lowest point is right by the wheel. If you run over something that would get hung up on it, chances are the wheel would also run right over the obstacle as well and the lower control arm thus gets lifted higher over the obstacle.

I prefer the lowest point in the back being closer to the wheel, such as in an IRS, than worrying about the lowest point farthest from the wheel, such as the diff on a an axle.

the XLT Sport is really nice except for those damn Low Pros. The 4th gens are just nice in general.

My 03 sits a decent amount higher then my 93 XLT and my co-workers 97 XLT.

Down here in the Land Down Under we didn't get the gen 1's so don't know about them but I've had a 98 XLT 4.0L sohc & now a 2000 XLT 4.0L sohc (both auto's) & have found them to be great "tourer's" that are more than capable of having a little bit of play as well specially with a 40mm lift, A/T tyres or better & aftermarket shocks.
There aren't that many of us that actually do take them out to play ( but there are getting to be more), as part price's are out of this world & thats when you can get them, & we are generally laughed at but I've managed to shock quite a lot of people (& rescue some as well).
We are laughed at mainly because our tracks & ground in general are a bit different here, as international rally drivers attest. We have very umm pebbly, hard & slippery surfaces as a rule with severve corrugations that eat up shocks & rattle bits & pieces of 4b's. On 1 of our "must do" tracks called the Gibb River road thats over 800klms long you see trailers rattled apart all along it also a few roll-overs from the sliding & fishtailing on the corrugations.
With a name over here for only so-so build quality (interior anyway). A lot of our main touring/4x4 tracks can be 1000klm's+ long over rough deserts & huge sand dunes with nothing but a roadhouse every 300klms or so.
This is where the parts bit comes in, when your 1800klms from the nearest big town & say you do a fuel pump (like I did) & there is only 1 in the country & it costs over $800 plus postage.
Anyway I love/loved my 2 X's but wont take them on anymore long 4x4 trips, just stick to the short fun ones. As for 3rd gen X's I know of only 1 over here that goes bush every now & then & he's on this forum with a red beast that has some Roadbully mods.
They stopped importing them down here in 2004 because of poor sales & Ford Australia built their own AWD version (the Territory) which for a couple of years was our top seller.:D
