With an alarm installed it could be anything. But, it sounds like a false door ajar input. The door ajar switches supply a ground to the body module. A wire shorted to ground could cause this. As for the dimmer turning off the interior lamps and allowing the alarm to set, this is probably due to how the alarm was connected to the dome lamp circuits. You'll want to find a wiring diagram and test for a short to ground on the door ajar circuits. Specifically the drivers door circuits. The boot between door and A-pillar is a common place for wiring problems due to the movement everytime the door is opened/closed.

Great info. I have a 02 as well and have the same exact problem. If you find the issue before I do post up and let me know.

i just returned from my local dealer with my problem. i told them everything i listed here and they placed my car on the computer and told me it was the switch in the driver front door. so i allowed them to repair the switch ,on the pay and leave and have the same problem. i returned immediately and voiced my displeasureof spending $250.00 and still having the same problem. the tech who worked on my car came out and i told him and showed him directly what the problem was and that whatever he did , did not resolve it. after showing him the light on the door going out when the door is placed halfway open he peeled back the boot between the door and shined a flashlight in and saw several wires disconnected or loose. he took it back in shop for about 20 mins and now my problem is resolved. so it sounds like the wiring in that boot door area is the problem as gus stated earlier. so if you are able to make the repair yourself please do or go to some place other than the dealer and tell them where to find the problem and let them fix it. i hope this helps.
