My 2002 Explorer XLT is making grinding noise only when accelerating. Motor runs great, oil clean. Mechanic says it needs a new transmission.

Shield

another mechanic told me it's something to do with the shield but having a hard time figuring it out. Anyone knows what to do? Thanks

This is one of those things that's impossible to accurately diagnose without being there.

A loose heat shield will rattle. I wouldn't describe that as a grinding noise. Grinding noises would come from rotating parts. Wheel bearings, bushings and bearings in the tranny and transfercase, rear differential etc.

Thank you

Great - you would think the mechanic would know that, right? Well its in the shop and they can't figure out why it's making that grinding noise considering that it was to take only an hour to fix and now the vehicle is in the shop for almost 3 full days. The transmision runs great no shifting problems. The motor is clean and runs good as well. It sounds like a grinding noise but only when accelerating and now when standing still. I will comment this to the mechanic where I bought the vehicle today.

It sounds like grinding but now, yeah, rattling - didn't think of that . Oh well let me see how it goes today. Thank you Rick.
