Ever since I've owned my 97 Mercury Mountaineer (just like an X) it's made a grinding/poping noise when you let it roll forward very slowly. As soon as you get going over 3-4 mph the sound goes away. It's been this way for the 5 years I've had it and it hasn't gotten any worse. It's got a 5.0 with AWD. I've heard a few others going the same thing. It sounds like the noise is coming from the transfer case or tranny. Somewere up front. Anyone know what this could be? I would think that if it was bearings, it would not just go away as soon as you started going over 3-4 mph. It sounds like a gritty, grinding, poping noise.

Gee, I thought I was the only one! The noise is more pronounced when I am making slow turns, especially when parking. Is there an inexpensive fix? I recently brought my mountaineer to a Ford Care Center. The service writer said that they couldn't service the transfer case because they no longer carry parts for the 1997 and that I should go to a tranny shop for an after-market fix. I just want to be sure it's the tranfer case before I start shelling out clams. I'm not a mechanic so I will have to hire someone to do the work. $$$$$$$! I'm planning on keeping my baby for a long while. Anybody have any suggestions?

you 2 may wanna check in the Transmissions and Transfer cases section you may be able to seek better help there... just a thought tho.
