I have a 2002 ford explorer. On cold days ONLY when I accelerate and whistle sound starts to develop. As i let off the gas the whistle starts to decrease then goes away. It doesnt happen all the time. Usually only in temperatures under 40 degrees. I took it to ford and they said it was the Idle air control valve. They replaced it with a new one but i noticed there is no gasket between the valve and intake. Is there suppose to be one? Seemed to make it better but the sound is still there sometimes. It comes and goes. No check engine lights. Only occurs during accleration.

Welcome aboard. My '02 does that whistle thing too. It's very faint though, and it doesn't get cold enough very often here for it to happen.:D

FYI they can make a hoot sound too when it gets real hot out and the ac is on. There's even a TSB for that one, but no resolution.

I've seen alot of Hondas whistle but never an Explorer...Strange.

2002 XLS Whistle

Have the exact same whistle sound on my 2002 V-6 XLS. Only when temp outside is below freezing and only when engine is cold at 1800-2200 rpm. Has been doing this since new! Have Ford ESP extended warranty with $50 deductible so plan to bring it in before it gets warm outside. Anyone know if this is a covered part/repair under ESP? Vehicle has 41,000 miles.

Whistle follow up on '02 Explorer 4.0

Idle Air Control Valve not covered under Ford ESP Extra Care so bought a Motorcraft replacement from Amazon.com (!) for about $22.00 and new gasket from local stealer ($9 for thin rubber gasket) even though original gasket still looked good. Old AICV was clean, no gunk build up. New AICV made whistle quieter but did not eliminate in below freezing weather. Now that it is warmer, no problem.

whistle

I have a 2002 ranger 4 cyl. that whistles only on cold days...any thoughts?

Same thing, 2003 XLS V6 4.0L If the temp is below 30 and I accelerate; it whistles

My wifes '03 XLT does the same thing. But only when its cold, and it goes away when the engine is warm.

Whistle when cold outside

You can try replacing the IACV (Motorcraft CX-1771) and gasket but no guaranty that it will cure the whistle problem. Wonder if there is a permanent fix to this?
