James at Hensonperformance.com can set you up with a custom tune + tuner for about 480 bucks that will GREATLY improve the shifting of the transmission. Tuning these trucks is also one of the best mods in terms of bang for your buck.

Is it an sct chip or is it a hand-held programmer or piggy back? Do these tunes help mpg?

James can do a custom tune for you that will do pretty much whatever you want it to. Just plug it into your computer and it'll change the settings, that's it, no need to install a piggyback or whatever...

Does the tune actually change how the vehicle shifts not just points? Like does it raise line pressure? I would like to keep my transmission safe with that extra holding capacity.

it is capable of both functions. James would be the one to talk to about actual mechanics of what the tune does to the truck, why dont you shoot him an email? he has it listed on his site. and hes always been more than willing to help me out with my rig. (running an 03 4.6L with full bolt ons).
