2002 Sport trac "stuck" in 4x4 low

Alright my friends 2002 Sport trac is now stuck in 4x4 low after using the 4x4 for the first time in a while today. She says that the 4x4 low light never used to work, but low gear did work. Now after using it today the light is on and its stuck in low. Ive tried pulling the fuses and beat on the motor on the transfer case but no luck. This is the 4x4 with the switch on the dash.

Anyone ever had this problem? Search will NOT work for me right now, Ive tried. Im thinking the motor on the transfer case is bad.

have you made sure it's in neutral when you try and shift it back?

^-- good call, make sure the transmission is in Neutral when switching in/out of 4LO.

For now, you can remove the shift motor from the transfer case and manually shift it. It will make sense to you once you take the motor off and look in. That will atleast get her back on the road. Most likely the motor needs cleaned out, or the electrical contacts need cleaned up. These things can get gummed up if they aren't used on a somewhat regular basis.
