2002 v8 tranny issue??

Guys, I tried searching on the Silver State Ford Parts Website 3 different times and couldn't find the listing for the 4x4 Control Module. Then I remember what I did when I ordered mine last February.

Go to the Contact Us section on their website and fill out all the info. Make sure you include your VIN and they will tell you the part number and the cost along with how to order it. Then you can order it using the part number.

You must order the part using their website to get the discounted price!

Hope this helps out.

CHeers mate , my Ex is in at my mechanic tomorrow to get the trans serviced but if this doesnt sort it out ill be goin down this path, at least to find out how much it costs :/

mwant0276 - I know wat ur talking about mate cos my auto 4x4 pissfarts around like that , but only on take off. Also i dont have my front driveshaft in at the moment so i know thats definately not the problem. The SCT unit did help it out somewhat when i got it but its definately gotten worse, even to the stage where if im gunnin it it wont change into 3rd at all , just hits the rev limiter cos its slipping too much now

Good luck getting it working right! :)

My 2002 Mountaineer shifted really bad between 3-4 but off and on, kinda like jerking and couldn't decide what gear it wanted. I removed the pan and the valve body wanting to clean it, I found a screen between the valve body and transmission, the pathways were blocked with gunk, I cleaned the valve body and screen with break clean then installed a new filter and filled with new fluid. It shifts like butter now, no problems at all!!!

im curious.....how do you fill the tranny with fluid when youre done? did you use a pump? im planning on taking my pan off and changing the solenoids but im trying to figure out how to get the fluid back up to full. Also has anyone tried adding a dipstick to theirs?

morziac- i spoke too soon. mines starting to slip when i really hammer down, but it feels like its all the gears. im thinking new torque converter solenoid pack and transgo kit? opinions anyone?

I used a pump that screws into the bottle then filled through the hole on the bottom, its tells you once it starts to pour out its full but I have found its always been a quart low when it pours out

is there a certain model/brand that makes a decent pump? im guessing theres a top hose/bottom hose that runs to the cooler?

I just used a crapy little pump that goes in the bottle that was is the oil section of the parts store. after it started to run run out of the pan I moved to the trans cooler and removed a hose to pump the extra quart there

i have a 2004 v8 and mine does the same thing .. idk if im brave enough to remove the pan and valve body but maybe thats all thats wrong with mine

Im sorry I want to re word my earlier post, I didn't pull my valve body it was the solenoid block and the screen was between the block and valve body. it was really easy if you just keep an eye on what goes where

Here is a post of a step by step for replacement http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164055

so once the solenoid pack is removed ill see the screen?

might be a project for next weekend ... how many qrts to fill back up 5?

I believe so, I think at 4 it started to pour out of the fill hole then one more through the cooler line

Ok quick update on my tranny issues, my first mechanic couldnt do the service cos he doesnt have the equipment for it, so i booked it in for next week at a transmission specialist. Today however i got new tyres put on and got the shop to put my driveshaft back in while they had it on the hoist. I go and pick her up and she's driving like a new truck again, no flaring in the gears, no slipping and no clunking or thumping. I didnt realise that the front shaft could have that sort of adverse effect on the tranny. U guys got any thoughts on the issue??

Most likely your tires were the problem, when a vehicle is in 4wd all four tires are connected, the transfer case is fighting the different gear ratios even if the tires were slightly off in size that is a lot when the truck is moving at normal speed. When you took the driveshaft out you removed that bond with the front tires to the back one.

i dont understand how worn tires could cause a slipping gearbox though, especially when the front shaft is out, that makes no sense to me?

Ohh I'm sorry, I misread it. I thought you took the shaft out because it was slipping...... that is strange

Didnt read anything what anyone else posted im a master tech at my dealer and i have 2 months till i get senior master. In my exp. you have the 5r55w which is sorry to say junk. just like the explorer wheel bearings this is a paper trans esp. if you tow. The case is more than likely wore out and over drive band may be going to go these trans normally only last 100,000 I have a 02 4.6 and the 5r55w but i did tons of reasearch and but a new servo bore, pistons, seal kit and clutches, and new valve body and they were all bullet proof this trans will out do anyother trans on the markewt right now and i also upgraded my torque converter so i dodnt have that annoying sound when in drive and at a stop. i figured ima go all or nothing since i had the drive shafts out and the pita exhaust and i also rerouted my exhaust since it was out and have true dual flow with 2 flows on it i was running gibson but i switch it out and ran them out and slanted them to a side like the older chevy tahoe. Any more info needed or any more ?s send me a pm

did u get ur gear from level 10? or is there another joint over there that makes beefed up gear for our boxes? If i have to get mine pulled apart ill be doin the same thing and gettin some stronger stuff rather than just replacing with the standard crap. Did u replace ur servo bores completely or use the Rotunda reamer kit? While im on the subject has anyone on here tried the Level 10 box thats built to suit 600HP or watever its rated for? For like $2500 that sounds alright to me. I got quoted the other day for a full rebuild of the 5r55w down here in Australia would cost me about $6500 :eek:
