2003 Explorer 4.0L
Hello
As of today I am the proud owner of a 2003 Eddie Bauer 4.0L VIN K, 160K. Obviously I bought this NOT Running..... Dealer said (E-bay) "cranks but won't start..." So first thing I tried was starting it and sounded funny, quick visual inspection I noticed that they ( Dealer ) had removed #6 plug. So I removed #5 plug and it had at least .100" gap in it, stock plug. Hooked a compression tester up and cranked it. Bounced maybe to 30 psi so hooked it up to #6 with same results... That didn't seem like much so I tried the right bank with same results... I think this might be a timing issue that bent some valves.... ? And also while cranking for maybe 5 seconds in a clip I noticed no oil pressure on instrument cluster and also a fuel data error on message when turning key on. I gotta 99 Mercury Mountaineer that had timing cassette issues which wasn't a walk in the park.... Any ideas or similar problems ? Thanks !

Thanks for the info ! Any idea on the compression spec ? Ive had 2 of the 99 4.0L's apart but nothing 2002 or newer 4.0L's...

No I don't have the compression info, but check thru "2000Streetrod's" posts they maybe in there or send him a message. From what I know he is quite knowledgeable on the 4.0L V6 engine and his posts on the subject show that.

slipped primary timing chain

Bent valves usually result in no compression. In my opinion low compression on all cylinders on both banks indicates a slipped primary (crankshaft to jackshaft) timing chain or two blown head gaskets. Head gaskets don't usually blow in a way that would affect all cylinders uniformly. Was the throttle wide open for the compression test?

Thanks for the response. No i did not have WOT while performing test... I pulled it in the garage and tried it again, first full rev or two jumped to 30 psi or so then fell off to just barley moving off 0 psi... Should i perform test with WOT ? I put all new plugs in and still nothing, removed plug 4 and did not smell like gas... Can here fuel pump with key on, have psi at rails and can smell fuel after cranking for extended periods... Now I never owned an Explorer this new, never heard one crank or start but I like the 2 99's i owned that i needed this one. What about security system? The red light blinks in middle of dash and goes away while cranking... ? Or do I do the WOT compression test before I consider anything else ?
Thanks again !!

OK decided to tear down.... Removed radiator, accessories and started intake and smelled gas, then after the front 3 intake bolts puddles of gas !!! Couldn't get off completely, left side rear bolt was full of rust stripped out, after 45 minutes of grinding bits and trying to clean out where a star shape ( Torque Bit ) should be i gave up for the day... Going to have to dill the head off, hopefully I can find a left hand drill bit at work tomorrow....
PS. Any idea why the in take is full of gas ?
Thanks again

Okay 1 month later I finally got the intake off.... And yes the 5 of the 6 intake runners are full of gas ! I'm going to try to post some pic. Next step valve covers and finish waterpump/front cover to see what happened !!

Update

Bolt that holds jackshaft sprockets is broke so removed motor... Turns out that a piece of right side cassette got wedged on jackshaft side sprocket and stopped all movement except the bottom end. Removed cams and pressure tested all cylinders. All cylinders had 99 psi out of 100 except cylinder 2, it had 50 psi cause the intake valve was leaking.... I think I got somewhat lucky on this, it must've happened while trying to start engine. Ordered all parts and should be here by weekend.

PS... I was at Ford Nationals this weekend in Carlisle, PA but I would rather replace all the components myself instead of buying a used motor that 9 chances out of 10 had or was going to have valve problems....
