I just recently purchased a 2003 XLT Explorer. I've had ford trucks before and a newer mustang. What I don't understand is how the auto 4x4 works. I read something in the manual that it says it applies constant pressure to all the wheels or something like that. But I think that's generic for all the explorers and montaineers. I have stepped on the gas while backing up ounce and chirped the tires and shortly there after I heard a clunking noise, like the 4x4 was trying to engage on dry pavement. That will be the last time I ever do that. After that I came to the conlcusion that if the tires slip, the transfer case engages. Is that correct?

Second question. The explorer has 29,000 miles on it and sometimes when I first get it started, in the first 15 to 20 minutes of running, it want's to hesitate at hard acceleration. It faintly jerks. I'm suspecting ignition, at least hoping. I took it to the dealer to diag the transmission and they uploaded the newest program into it. It still does it. It doesn't do it all the time but just every now and then. No I have not done a fluid change on the transmission, looking to do that in the next month or so. I have not looked at the spark plugs yet, just looking for some hints before I dig into it. Oh hey and well I'm typing, how many gears does my transmission have. I thought it had 5, but every time I count it shift, I get 6. I'm assuming it has a 5 speed with an overdrive. OH and it has the 4.0L. thanks for any help ahead of time.
