2003 Explorer rear differential leak.

The SKF one on Rockauto for $20 shipped has the same P/N as the link you sent. Does anyone know if the NATIONAL Part # 100537 is the new style having the seal protector and if it comes with circlip? Thanks.

That's the old style, no circlip in the package, just the seal itself. Cheap though.

Thanks, Esclamada. Yes, it's cheap up front, but I'd probably spend an extra $50to ensure it doesn't leak the first time and not have to redo the job.

OK, so what I gather is that SKF and (dealer-sold) Motorcraft are the only ones who currently have the new style (the kind that the seal is protected so that it can't get damaged by the axle shaft upon installation). I'm assuming, based on their cheap price for the MC seal, that Rockauto is selling the old style Motorcraft seal [their pic only shows the back (outboard) side of the seal].

Thanks for the info...it saved me a big headache (I was looking at the differential pinion seal).

I'm curious if you chose the SKF ones for a reason...Rockauto.com has the Timkens for $12.56 shipped (not counting my 5% discount code) and the National (Federal-Mogul) ones for even less and the Motorcraft ones were the cheapest(??). However, I did notice they had the SKF ones for essentially the same price as what you got yours.

I've always heard from various maintenance folks that Timken made the best bearings with SKF pretty close if not equal. But, I do realize we're talking seals here.

I bought SKF because that is what my parts guy I work with carries. I also didn't want the old style that a person has to worry about reinstalling and damaging the seal.

Then, does anybody know if the Motorcraft seal on www.rockauto.com is the new style or the old style? Personally, the picture doesn't help me cuz I'm not sure what I'm looking for, and I don't think Rockauto's reps will know the difference. I can get a set of these for about $13 shipped, whereas the SKF seals will be $40 shipped.

Here's a pic and the site's description (if it matters, the pic is dated 2009):

MOTORCRAFT Part # BRS40 {#E3TW1177AA, E3TZ1S177A} Rear Outer; 1.618 ID X 2.579 OD X 0.475 Thick

that's not the correct part, it's for the solid axle (or non-irs)

here's the correct part (SKF) if you have irs. Unfortunately there's no Motorcraft being sold at rockauto for the seal kit.

Thanks AGAIN, that explains the much cheaper price (I was thinking all the '02 Explorers/Mounties had IRS). Oh well, it'll be SKF then for this next project. The current project is I've had the trannie pan off it for 2 days now letting as much fluid drain as possible before I have to put it back together.

SKF seals were the way to go. They went in great and no leaks at all! Makes me happy that the vehicle has no drips in the driveway now.
